ÅSHILD KANSTAD JOHNSEN

Åshild grew up on one of the many mountainsides of Bergen. The climate and geologic features of Bergen characterize her works and make her one of the most representative Norwegian illustrators. Her sketchbooks are filled with mountains, rocks, stones, trees, fjords and wooden houses.

Inspired by the log, the vegetal pet of a supporting character in David Lynch’s phenomenal TV series Twin Peaks, Åshild created a little log boy named Kubbe who loves
collecting all kinds of stuff. He makes a museum, albums and plays concerts with strange homemade instruments.

Kubbe has brought Åshild’s works all the way to Japan and China. In her drawings one can also find the traces of her love for music and dance, not just in the content but also in the composition and rhythm.

She often organizes her illustrations on one page in a rhythmic and systematic way, so-called “knolling”. But according to herself, she is otherwise not very organized. The production of picture books has given some sort of order and the feeling of fulfillment in her otherwise chaotic life.
